Notiophilus
Notiophilus is a genus of very distinctive ground beetles, eight species occur in Britain and several are abundant and widespread. Some will turn up, sooner rather than later, when turning logs or debris or pitfall trapping and N.biguttatus may be found in hot weather running on pavements or by searching along borders of garden pathways or shrub beds. Species occur in a wide range of habitats. Formally they may be distinguished on a combination of well developed characters such as the widened second elytral interval, the enormous eyes and the series of longitudinal carinae but for practical purposes there is nothing, carabid or otherwise, in the British list resembling them. The genus will become quickly familiar and indentified in the field with confidence.
